Handling Trauma After A Car Wreck

Car accidents can be described as chaotic and highly stressful events that often occur with no warning whatsoever. Increased traffic on the roads usually is a precursor to a spate of car accidents. If you find yourself involved in a car crash you will most likely find yourself to be unprepared for it.

People can feel difficult emotions for a period of time following a car crash. Some of the common emotions that people feel after being involved in a car crash are:

Shock

People usually are in shock immediately following a car accident or even in the days. People experience shock differently, however common symptoms exhibited include numbness, emotional distress, feeling scared or having unpredictable mood swings.

Anger

People generally feel protracted hostility towards the driver of the other car after an auto accident, whether they were at fault or not. People may also feel angry at themselves and if such feelings of irritation and agitation persist then it is possible that you may get into a fight or display signs of over aggression.

Guilt

If someone feels that an accident is their fault or if they feel like it could have been avoided but for a mistake on their own part they have protracted feelings of guilt. Even witnesses to car wrecks may subconsciously blame themselves for failing to prevent the occurrence

Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural reaction to enduring a stressful incident like a car accident. Occasionally, people may not experience any symptom of anxiety at all and many people who do recover quickly. The common symptoms of anxiety are:

  • Worrying
  • Unable to relax or sleep properly
  • Finding it difficult to concentrate
  • Feeling unsociable, not wanting to talk
  • Feeling upset, confused, out of control, or helpless
  • Feeling irritable
  • Having no energy
  • Keeping busy to avoid thinking
  • Unwanted thoughts

In order to combat anxiety it is helpful to confide your feelings in the people you trust such as family, friends, qualified counsellor or psychologist. Eating balanced meals, getting adequate sleep, avoiding alcohol, cigarettes and drugs, are effective ways to reduce or even eliminate anxiety altogether.

The combined effects of all these emotions after a car accident can manifest in the form of the following physical symptoms:

  • Sleep disorders
  • Racing heartbeat, dry mouth
  • Fatigue, low energy
  • Muscle tension, pains
  • Headache, stomach distress
  • Hypervigilance
  • Intrusive memories or flashbacks

Some strategies that can be employed to help yourself heal from the traumatic emotions associated with an injury sustained as a result of a car wreck are as follows:

  • Eat a balanced diet,
  • Exercise often
  • Get plenty of sleep and rest.
  • Keep a balanced schedule between work/school and home.
  • Share your experience with your family, friends or qualified counsellors.
  • Focus on meditation or prayer.
